Many cultures believe that the soul may escape a body through its natural openings, in particular through the mouth and nose.

In German folklore, it is thought that the soul may escape a sleeper’s mouth in the form of a white mouse or a little bird, and that it would be fatal if the animal-spirit did not return by morning. In Transylvania it is said that one should never let a child sleep with its mouth open in case the soul is tempted to crawl out in the form of a mouse, in
which event the child would never wake."/>
The Buddhist belief in the soul’s departure from the body at death means that the corpse is treated with little veneration.

In the ritual of Tibetan sky burial, the body is dismembered, hacked and ground by a monk and accompanying “rogyapas” (body breakers), and left high in the mountains to be fed to the vultures. It is thought that the vultures, which are believed by the Buddhists to be sacred animals, will transport the soul into the celestial heavens."/>
The islanders of Manus believe that the life-force of every person is closely linked with their physical presence, even after death. Following the death of an ancestor, the family will place the skull of the recently-deceased in the rafters of the household in order to protect the inhabitants. If any member then falls ill, it is thought that the skull has failed in its duty, and is replaced by an elder, hopefully more powerful ancestor."/>

When he broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered for God's word and for the testimony they bore.
